There is a new registration process for the 2019/2020 school year in the South Orange/Maplewood school district. Changes have been made and now registration will be online! Some of the changes include the launch of a new online registration portal, the opportunity to schedule appointments for the in-person portion of registration, and a specific week designated for appointments for each school. The goal is to make registration more user friendly and cut down on the amount of time spent waiting in the district office.
The process is as follows:
Pre-register online – here you can create an account, collect and submit information online
In-person appointment – you must provide proof of residency and complete the registration. You will be prompted to select an appointment time for the in-person portion of registration which is available by school and takes place at the Board of Education. An evening registration will be available, but the date is still to be determined. Appointments can also be made by contacting the Office Of Registration at 973-762-5600 x1830 or at firstname.lastname@example.org (please allow up to 24 hours for a response).
Placement – every effort is made to keep children in their zoned schools. Currently, 28% of elementary students attend schools that are not their zoned school. The school district is involved in a Long Range Facilities Plan and Elementary Reconfiguring Initiative which should resolve many of the current issues, but this will not take place for the 2019/2020 school year. For the 2019/2020 school year, the student placement priority is as follows:
- Special program requirements
- Sibling preference
- Lottery, if necessary, for all zoned families who registered during the registration period
- Elementary choice is also available. Students zoned for Clinton, Jefferson, Marshall, South Mountain and Tuscan can opt in to Seth Boyden, and families zoned for Seth Boyden can opt in to Marshall or Jefferson.
Families will be notified by May as to their assigned school.
