Maplewood History
Maplewood’s main thoroughfares began as paths used by the Lenape Native Americans. The first European settlers to the area arrived in 1675, having acquired most of today’s Essex County from the Lenape. Six families settled an area that became known as Jefferson Village which roughly corresponds to modern-day downtown Maplewood. The village developed mills and orchards and as time progressed more families moved to the area. Another settlement called North Farms developed on a hill crest near what is now Tuscan and Springfield Avenue. In 1802 these two settlements were named as districts under the Township of Newark.
Maplewood was originally formed as South Orange Township in 1861 from portions of Clinton Township and the Town of Orange. The name was later changed to Maplewood in 1922. During this time, the area saw significant growth both in construction and in the residential population, becoming the Maplewood we know today.
