As many of you know, I recently moved to a new home and one of the things I just did was install a sprinkler system to compliment some new landscaping. I worked with Robert Moakler of Greg Tanzer Inc. and could not have been more pleased with their service.
Here are Robert’s tips for buying and installing a sprinkler system:
A properly designed and installed automatic sprinkler system will keep your lawn, shrubs, flowers, and other greenery beautiful and healthy.
Automated systems control against over or under watering, and a properly installed and maintained irrigation system can promote water conservation, which saves you money—and, of course, time.
The heart of an underground system is pop-up sprinkler heads. When working, the heads raise up a few inches to spray water on your landscape. When not in use, they drop to ground level so you can mow or walk right over them.
Today’s systems are pretty darn smart. Automated features decide when it’s been raining too much or too little, then adjust the amount of water your landscaping gets. That lowers the worry quotient for you, heads off costly over-watering, and makes the whole system almost maintenance-free.
The “next generation” of sprinkler controllers can save you a lot of hassle as well as money. These devices, which can be programmed via computer or smart phone app, automatically adjust your sprinkler system to account for the types of landscaping you have, season changes and local weather trends.
Once installed, a sprinkler system is fairly easy to maintain… Have the pros do it! Spring start up, turns on the system and fine tunes the heads, Mid-season inspection, that ensures all is running well and Winterizing, the most important, to “blow out’’ the water lines and close down the system for cold weather. All companies should have an affordable service plan that should not cost more than $200 per year for the three visits.
A professionally installed system for a typical ¼-acre lot will cost $2,500 to $4,000, depending on the landscaping needs and layout it is irrigating.
