Here in the US, it is typically celebrated in the Fall and will take place on Sunday, October 28 at the Woodland in Maplewood.
The holiday has its origins in Hinduism, and the general meaning of Diwali is victory of light over darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair. But because the holiday is celebrated in many different countries, it can take on different meanings. Diwali Fest NJ 2018 is about sharing what Diwali means in a personal way for members of the community.
Diwali Fest NJ is returning to Maplewood for its second year as a grand celebration of South Asian Arts and Cultural Festival. The festival will present a distinctive and authentic South Asian experience that reflects the tremendous artistic and cultural diversity of the area. Diwali Fest NJ is free and open to the entire community. It promises fun for the whole family with food, dance, music and children’s activities.
The festival will feature local South Asian American dancers, musicians, chefs, writers, and artists. Families will have the opportunity to participate in hands-on workshops such as cooking, creating Indian folk art, and Bollywood dancing. Regional cuisine from a variety of local South Asian restaurants will be available for sampling. Diwali Fest NJ will also feature an eclectic mix of jewelry, clothing, and handicraft vendors. And there will be many activities for the kids. The festivities will conclude with the traditional lighting of lamps.
