Academy Heights Neighborhood Details
The Academy Heights neighborhood, where this home is located, is a prime location in South Orange. It is known as a beautiful, peaceful, family friendly community. Neighbors love the area for its walkability, and the neighborhood is welcoming and friendly. People who live in this neighborhood enjoy activities such as getting together with friends, cooking, traveling, walking and volunteering.
The Academy Heights neighborhood takes its name from Academy Street, which runs the length of the neighborhood, and from the uphill slope away from the valley. This neighborhood has beautiful views of South Mountain and is close to all major forms of transportation.
The Housing stock in the Academy Heights neighborhood is diverse. There are single family homes, two-family homes, apartment buildings and condominiums. Although most homes in Academy Heights were built before 1930, there are also some newer homes, garden apartments, and apartment buildings. Most homes in this area are on smaller lots which mean lower property taxes, less maintenance and a real feeling of neighborliness.
Academy Heights is one of South Orange’s most centrally located neighborhoods. You can walk to most parts of South Orange or Maplewood from the area. Within easy walking distance are Columbia High School, bars and restaurants, village hall, banks, boutiques, a supermarket and the famous SOPAC. The South Orange Train Station or a major bus stop can also be reached in just a few minutes.
Academy Heights was originally a “streetcar suburb” with streetcars running along Valley Street before turning east onto South Orange Avenue and running to Newark. A passenger rail line was then constructed one block west of Valley Street. This line originally ran to Newark-Broad Street. In the mid 1990’s, NJ Transit connected the rail line to New York Penn Station.
Academy Heights has its own park, off Valley Street near 5th. This park, known as Founder’s Park, has a small playground, swing sets, and numerous benches. In the Spring, the residents of Academy Heights have a park clean-up day and contribute to plantings throughout the green area.
The South Mountain Reservation is just a short drive west on South Orange Avenue. There you can enjoy recreation areas and hiking trails as well as many other activities. The Academy Heights neighborhood is within close proximity to major highways, business centers and Newark Airport. It is also just minutes away from major sports and entertainment venues and is just a short drive from ski resorts and our beautiful New Jersey beaches.
Some of the many benefits to living in this area are:
- The bustling South Orange Village is an easy walk away for shopping, dining and entertainment.
