The National Association of Realtor’s annual survey of thousands of recent home buyers and sellers reveals some interesting trends. This nationwide survey of people who purchased or sold homes in 2012-2013 sheds light on demographic trends, typical housing characteristics, the role of real estate agents and how buyers and sellers act as consumers in the market place. Here are some things that caught my eye:
– 38% of buyers were first time buyers and 66% of buyers were married couples
– 88% of purchases were of single family homes
– the typical buyer looks at 10 homes over a 12 week period
– 42% of buyers found their agent through a friend of family member
– what buyers want most from their agent is for the agent to find them the right home to purchase
– the typical seller lived in their home for 9 years– up 3 years from 2006
– 2/3 of home sellers contacted on one real estate agent
– Only 9% of sellers did not use an agent and their sales sold for an average of $184,000 versus $230,000 for agent assisted home sales
