Maplewood Quilting Company launched this month, offering a cutting-edge and contemporary twist on a traditional craft. Born out of a love for color and playfulness with line and shape, designer and owner Maddy Shaw has created a brand worth talking about.
Maddy is very excited about the next phase of her carefully curated business. She takes the traditional art of quilt-making and transforms it into a modern, bold, vibrant art form with immense imagination. She says she is not constrained by the convention of traditional quilting. Bold geometric designs in interesting color combinations create a warm, playful and edgy product.
After studying fine art while at university, Maddy taught herself crafting, sewing and quilt-making. She moved to Germany after she got married, and because she and her new husband had little money and knew no one, her lifeline became a sewing machine her parents had given her as a wedding gift. She began to create small gifts for family and friends back home. She made her first quilt in 2012 when her daughter was born, and her love of the art form was born.
Over time, Maddy’s quilting style has become more focused, and she is obsessed with color pairings. Her work is now distinguished by the use of lines, geometric shapes and bold, unexpected color palettes. Her quilts inject warmth and personality into whatever room they call home.
Most of the quilts are commissioned, and Maddy works with her clients to establish a suitable style and color scheme for each. Nevertheless, she generally has creative freedom when designing a quilt. She does have a few quilts currently available for purchase at Toy Division and Maplewood Mercantile. The price of a quilt varies depending on its size and complexity.
