This month our Local Love feature is on ElleWorx, a massage spa in Maplewood.
Are the pressures of everyday life in Jersey getting to you? Are you feeling tension or pain in a particular area of your body due to stress or over use? If so, you need to visit ElleWorx, an amazing massage spa based in Maplewood.
Elle Barnett, owner of ElleWorx, brings more than 17 years of knowledge to her field of study. Her primary goal is to provide the “best massage to promote good health, relaxation and an overall feeling of happiness which leads to better relationships, better job performance and ultimately a better sense of well-being and wholeness.”
Sheayla Osborne, the other therapist at ElleWorx, believes that true happiness and satisfaction come from giving to others. She has done extensive training and research in her field, and customizes each session to meet and achieve a client’s needs and goals.
Nicole Jones is the aesthetician in the group. From personal experience, she understands how the environment, nutrition and stress affect us, and she takes great satisfaction in making positive changes to a clients skincare and ultimately in their confidence level.
Elle received her formal training in massage in California and then worked conventions and did corporate work. She found that while the work was hard, it helped her realize the importance of staying connected to and taking care of yourself at the same time. She believes that healing and good health work together, so another goal is to educate everyone on the importance of massage, meditation, exercise and diet as a whole.
Elle began her massage career at about the age of 6 or 7. Her mom, who loved to be pampered, had Elle work on her for hours each day. As others in her family learned of her magical abilities, they requested back rubs and such during family gatherings. When her step-father suffered from painful migraines, Elle stepped in and learned techniques to alleviate his pain. As she grew older, she learned that those techniques were actually known pressure points and meridians. What Elle didn’t realize at the time was that peopleneeded her services.
She deviated from her massage career for a while and worked in customer service for Alaska Airlines and as a flight attendant for United. But she always found time to help her co-workers escape the pressures of their lifestyle by squeezing in quick massages between flights. After a while she decided to leave the airline industry and go off on her own to follow her true passion – massage.
Elle told me, “I love my clients! My clients are the reason I do what I do.”
She is a versatile massage therapist. She does light massage, prenatal, or deep tissue massages for her clients. Her client roster is extremely varied – she has young, progressive clients and corporate clients. With her corporate clients, she finds that bringing massages to a location increases morale and productivity among the employees. She also does special events, girl’s night out and chair massages. And she is the massage therapist at Winchester Gardens, an independent senior living facility in Maplewood.
Elle lives in Maplewood with her husband and three children. She says juggling home life and work is challenging, so she allows herself one day off a week for self care. Having to wear many hats in her life helps her succeed in what she does. She finds she is more nurturing and understanding than ever before, and she is sensitive to people’s quirks.
Elle is happy to make suggestions for the type of massage and frequency that will best suit a client, as well as recommending other professionals who may be helpful in achieving a more healthy and relaxed lifestyle.
