There are a lot fun local events planned by our communities over the next few weeks for you and your family to enjoy! 

 

 

Bye Bye Birdie – This classic musical, based in the 1960’s, is a fun time for the whole family. July 27 – August 5 7:30pm Summit Playhouse

Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey Presents: “Titus Andronicus” – July 18-August 5: This unsettling portrait of a society drowning in violence and lacking in civil thought or action holds a disturbing resemblance to aspects of our current world. Times and prices vary.

Mapping the Unknown. Abstract Topographies by Agnes Deja – Solo exhibition of works by a NJ painter and sculptor Agnes Deja. West Orange Public Library August 1 – August 31 Opening reception Saturday, August 4 2:00-5:00pm

NJ Dance Theatre Ensemble INKUBATE – INKUBATE® is a collaboration between the New Jersey Dance Theatre Ensemble and Reeves-Reed Arboretum offering an “enchanting and exhilarating” evening on the Arboretum grounds. Wednesday, August 1 at 7:00pm Reeves-Reed Arboretum. The Arboretum grounds will open at 6:00pm for concertgoers to picnic.

Family Fun Nights – Wednesdays and Thursdays at The Turtle Back ZooEssex County Turtle Back Zoo has extended hours from 5:00-8:00pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays through August 30th. Enjoy the Zoo when the summer temperatures are cooler and the workday is over. Paid admission is required to enter the Zoo each evening.

On Wednesdays, enjoy Zoo-vies! After playing late at the Zoo, enjoy blockbuster movies under the stars on the rooftop of the parking deck. Admission is free. Zoo admission is not required to participate. Bring your own chair. Films begin at dusk.

South Orange Summer Nights Art in the Park, Concerts in the Park and Moonlit Movies are Wednesday night programs collectively known as South Orange Summer Nights.

  • Art In The Park – August 1 at Floods Hill: “Pendulum Art”
  • Concerts in The Park – August 1: Stuff Bros. and Marry The Sea
  • Moonlit Movies:
  1. August 15 – Coco (2017 Rated PG)
  2. August 22 – Jumanji (2017 Rated PG-13)
  3. August 29 – Despicable Me 3 (2017 Rated PG)

Bickford Summer JazzFest – The Bickford Theatre in Morristown will combine great jazz with some of the region’s best food trucks on-site before each concert. Different food trucks will be featured so that both ticket holders and the general public can picnic on the beautiful Morris Museum grounds or tailgate in the spacious parking area from 5:30-7:30pm on festival nights.

  • Thursday, August 2 – Dan Levinson’s Midsummer Night’s Jazz Party
  • Thursday, August 16 – Dance Party with Louis Prima, Jr. and The Witnesses

Zucchini-Palooza! In honor of “National Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day,” celebrate this versatile vegetable with an afternoon of zucchini-themed fun. Enjoy Zucchini Car Races, Squash Toss Games, garden tours, scavenger hunts, and more. The Frelinghuysen Arboretum Morris Township Sunday, August 5 1:00-4:00pm

National Night Out National Night Out is a community-police awareness-raising event in the United States, held the first Tuesday of August.

  • South Orange – Flood’s Hill 6:30pm August 7 – live music, a Kids Zone with bounce houses, water slides, activities, and giveaways, including t-shirts, Frisbees, and glow sticks. There will also be food truck vendors throughout the event. National Night Out ends with a showing of The Greatest Showman at 8:30pm. Bring blankets and lawn chairs.
  • Maplewood – DeHart Park (120 Burnett Ave.) from 6:00-9:00pm on Tuesday, August 7. The event will feature music, food, and fun.

Tour the Garden at TwilightEnjoy wine and cheese on the East Terrace at 6:00pm and a guided walk through the gardens that begins promptly at 6:45 pm. Greenwood Gardens Short Hills Tuesday, August 7

Donna Summer Tribute Concert Rainere Martin’s Donna Summer Tribute relives both a legend and an era that are known and loved by all ages, with special guest Thos Shipley performing the best of disco and soul. Thursday August 9, 2018 Union Elks Lodge #1583, Union 8:00pm

Downtown Concert Series: Mama D & The VexationsMama D & The Vexations is a high-energy cover band with a soulful edge with renditions of hits from the 60’s through today. All band members are music educators, teaching public school and private lessons in Morris and Essex Counties.Friday, August 10 6:00-8:00pm Museum of Early Trades & Crafts in Madison

Montclair Jazz Festival This annual all-day music showcase will host as many as 10,000 people on Saturday, August 11, from noon to 9:00pm. This year’s festival will be headlined by Grammy Award-winning pianist Eddie Palmieri, and acclaimed saxophonist and Montclair resident Oliver Lake, who is scheduled to perform as part of a trio with fellow Montclairite Reggie Workman on bass and drummer Andrew Cyrille. “No Tickets Required” admission!

Annual Gem, Mineral and Fossil Sale Shop with top mineral, gem and fossil dealers. Thousands of specimens, books, jewelry, and more (including overstock from the Morris Museum Collection) will be offered for sale. Morris Museum Saturday, August 18 10:00-5:00pm

The American Tour of the Parisian Choir “Les Petits Chanteurs de Nogent-sur-Marne” – For over 60 years, the choir has been singing and traveling the world allowing the boys to share their culture through music. Calvary Episcopal Church, Summit Saturday, August 18 7:30pm

Plant Walk Familiarize yourself with the wonderful collection of trees, shrubs, perennials and the ever-changing annual displays in Greenwood Gardens.Wednesday, August 22 Short Hills 6:00-7:00pm

Le Pique Nique Wine & Music FestivalCome out for an enjoyable evening of live music, delicious wines, friends, and great cuisine. The dress-code for Le Pique Nique is mandatory summer chic, blue and/or white, or a combination of both.
