Short Hills is a popular commuter community in the southwest corner of Essex county with easy access to New York City via public transportation. Its current residential population is just over 20,000, which includes the hamlet of Short Hills.

Millburn and Short Hills are two different zip codes that share a township government and school system. Known as one of the state’s most affluent residential communities, Millburn/Short Hills is known for its luxury housing market and shopping mall. Those who know it better understand that the town offers a variety of housing styles and price ranges with Millburn homes generally being more affordable than those in Short Hills.

Millburn was recently ranked as one of the Top 100 places to live in New Jersey by New Jersey Monthly magazine. The town lies about 15 miles from Manhattan and is bordered by Livingston, Florham Park, Chatham Township, Summit, Springfield Township, Union Township, Maplewood and West Orange. It is bisected by the Rahway River. The town encompasses 9.4 square miles.

The Millburn school system is invariably ranked as one of the top in the state. Millburn has a great downtown district with thriving shops and restaurants, a movie house and regional theater (Paper Mill Playhouse). The Mall at Short Hills is a huge regional shopping center located on the western side of town that features national retailers as well as unique specialty shops.

  • The Cora Hartshorn Arboretum and Bird Sanctuary, a woodland area of almost 16 1/2 acres with 3 miles of trails, provides many educational opportunities for children and adults.
  • Greenwood Gardens fosters an appreciation of gardens and a respect for nature. Guided tours are available May through November.
  • The Mall at Short Hills is a premiere shopping center with four upscale anchor stores and more than 150 luxury specialty stores.
  • The Papermill Playhouse is one of the oldest regional theaters in the country, and many shows that premiere here make it to Broadway. It was awarded the Regional Theater Tony Award in 2016.
