Grand homes and gas-lit streets

Glen Ridge, a beautiful town in Essex County NJ, is named for the glen through which Toney’s Brook runs and the ridge on which the town is located. The town has a population of approximately 7,000 and is almost completely residential. But with the close proximity of Bloomfield and Montclair, the local residents don’t seem to mind. A wide variety of shopping choices are nearby in the neighboring towns, and all the shopping, entertainment and culture that Manhattan has to offer is just a short trip away. The beauty and charm of the area gives Glen Ridge a decidedly small town feel in a large metropolitan area.

The town is situated approximately 20 miles west of Manhattan and covers an area of 1.287 square miles. It is bound by Bloomfield to the east, Montclair to the west, and East Orange to the south. As a result, it is conveniently located and within easy commuting distance of Manhattan by bus, train or car.

The homes are well maintained and are a mix of beautiful, stately Colonials and Victorians. There are also some co-op apartments, condominiums, and townhouses available. More than 80% of the borough falls within the historic district. And, almost three quarters of the housing stock was built before 1939.

The town is known for the gaslights that illuminate the local streets, a legacy left by the founders of Glen Ridge. Throughout the United States there are only 3,000 gaslights still in operation, and 667 of them can be found in tiny Glen Ridge. The small, well-regarded public school system is prized by its residents.
