But sometimes the best shopping can be found in your own home town. I’ve put together a selection of some of the unique retail establishments in our area that I’m sure you will find irresistible.

 

Salvage Style, a vintage home furnishings store located in the heart of downtown Maplewood, offers chic home furnishings with a past. The owner Amy Hughes, a magazine editor, writer, and seasoned DIYer scours estate sales and flea markets for items that are architecturally interesting to transform into new home decor. She re-upholsters or re-purposes the pieces with non-toxic materials to create updated and stylish treasures for your home. She also finds fun, affordable accent pieces. There is always something “new” to discover.

 

Kitchen a la Mode, open since 2008, is a quirky kitchen shop located in South Orange. Ben Salmon, the proprietor, carefully hand-selects unusual, fun and useful items to make your kitchen experience rewarding and enjoyable. The shop carries thousands of products from well known time-tested brands to exciting new brands. They also offer knife sharpening, Sodastream gas refills, and filters for water pitchers. The prices are lower than you would expect, and the service is great! This unique shop is consistently named the Best Kitchenware Store in NJ.

 

Seed 387, short for Simple Elegant Design, has been in business in downtown Millburn since October 2010. Its owners, Judith Rudman and Nancy Levy, travel the world to find unique, fabulous home furnishings and lifestyle pieces. DoubleTake Luxury Consignment is one of the country’s premier luxury consignment boutiques.  It opened in Short Hills in 1992. Two additional locations were added in 2010 in Red Bank and Ridgewood. Jay’s Shoe Box in Livingston is a family run business that was established in 1954 and offers the largest selection of kids shoes in the area. Jabberwocky in Chatham is a family-owned retail establishment that offers a hand-picked selection of award winning children’s books and educational toys. British Home Emporium, located in a restored livery stable in Madison, offers 7000 square feet of amazing home furnishings. No. 18, a high end women’s clothing and accessories boutique in Summit, is the manifestation of owner Brianne Tammaro’s lifelong dream.
