Columbia High School Scholarship Fund
A few Septembers ago I attended for the first time a cocktail reception fundraiser for the Columbia High School Scholarship Fund (CHSSF) at a home in the Montrose area of S. Orange, NJ. I did not graduate from Columbia High School and had no children attending CHS at the time, so I was not familiar with the event or the organization.
What I learned is that CHSSF gives financial assistance to CHS grads based on need for post-secondary education. Since it was founded in 1923, it has given away over $1.1 million in scholarships. The thing I found most profound about the event were the emotional personal testimonials given by CHS grads that have received help from CHSSF. The students were touchingly surprised by the support given to them by the community. For them, the aid made the difference between being able to attend college/grad school or not.
The board of trustees is of CHS consists of South Orange and Maplewood residents who choose to take an active role in the community. Many of them are names you will recognize from their involvement with other organizations such as Rowland Bennett, longtime Maplewood Library Director; Carol Barry Austin who is a Trustee of the Community Coalition; Mila Jasey, our local assemblywoman and Alan Tumolillo, a CHS physics teacher who runs the school’s robotics team. The high level of commitment of regular residents of the two towns to civic involvement is one of the things that I appreciate most about living in Maplewood/S. Orange. As a Maplewood/S.
