Summit is a culturally and economically diverse community in Union County.  The city is known for its excellent public schools, its beautiful tree-lined streets, and its community-oriented business district. Summit is a popular commuter city with a direct rail line to New York Penn Station in midtown Manhattan.

The city has a population of about 21,000 and covers a total area of just over six miles. It shares a border with Millburn to the southeast, Chatham and Chatham Township to the northwest, New Providence to the west, Berkeley Heights to the southwest, Mountainside to the south, and Springfield Township to the southeast.

Summit also has a nice mix of housing choices ranging from the very high end, particularly in the “Northside” of town, to more modest homes, and a good number of apartment houses as well. Its neighborhoods are distinct and walkable with a variety of styles from split levels, Tudors and Colonials to Victorian estates. Summit schools are quite well regarded and there are a number of private school options right in town, including Kent Place, Oratory Prep and Oak Knoll. With its proximity to Manhattan and major highways, great train service, schools and amenities Summit is a top choice with the most selective buyers.

Unique to Town

  • The Family Aquatic Center offers swim teams and lessons to all ages and abilities, as well as adult Aquasize. T’Ai Chi and Gentle Chair Yoga are also offered to help community members relax and destress.
  • The Municipal Golf Course is an award winning, 9 hole, Par 3, 100 yard course.
  • Townwide Community Programs are extensive. Sports programs range from beginner to accomplished athlete, enrichment programs span math, science and more,  and special needs and senior services are offered.

Numerous annual local events solidify a community feel.

  • Fourth of July is filled with family fun events at Soldier’s Memorial Field during the day and fireworks at night.
  • Halloween is celebrated with a parade, a Monster Mash dance party, an outdoor movie event and a bonfire.
  • Hot Summer Nights is an outdoor concert series offered every Tuesday night in July.
  • National Night Out Against Crime is an evening of education, entertainment and community held at the Village Green by some of the local community organizations.
  • Screen on the Green is an outdoor movie series offered Thursday nights throughout July and August.
  • Summit Heritage Day celebrates the cultural diversity of the town. More than 35 different languages are spoken by the town’s residents. Heritage Day is filled with cultural dance and singing performances, cultural food, historical characters and displays, and a concert on the main stage. A special Heritage Day Trivia Bee tests kids in grades 4-7 on their knowledge of Summit history.
